Stricter environmental standards and international regulations with regard to water have led to considerable challenges in the water sector. Both on the demand side and the supply side, market players are faced with increasing investments as a result of shifts in the demand curve. We have also noticed the rise of internationally operating water (technology) companies.

An integrated, global water policy is indispensible. The EU wrote its first directives in 2000 to protect our water supplies and systems. The public infrastructure in Belgium has always been geared towards drinking water production and distribution, but market needs have now changed profoundly. Product (re)orientation and clear market positioning for all water players are therefore an absolute must!

Water sector challenges and trends:
1. Alternative water demand: due to ever-stricter environmental standards, there is a high demand for alternative water supplies and water reuse, mainly in industrial applications.
2. Increasing investment: advice, operation and management regarding sustainable water systems are the main factors determining demand in this respect.
3. Outsourcing of Total Water Management: alternative water use and the implementation of solutions is usually not part of industrial companies’ core business, so there is an increasing trend to outsource water (supply) chain management.
4. International expansion: competition and new technologies are the main factors boosting the development of new water products and services.

A market for industrial water?
A water product’s scale can be increased through diversification depending on its use: drinking water – industrial water – wastewater. The production of alternative water for industrial applications can still be considered a growing market with sufficient potential.
